columbuschefs.com basi Italia... ![]() John Dornback, Chef/Owner Trish Gentile, Partner In Columbus we always have a new “in” restaurant - something like the flavor of the month. Meet Basi Italia, an intimate and very small Italian establishment seating 38 guests for dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Lunch is served Tuesday through Friday. Smallness in any restaurant usually means the person in the kitchen is preparing every meal, every dish, and dressing every platter that moves to the dining room. Basi Italia fits the bill for a chef-driven restaurant. Chef John Dornback, a graduate of the French Culinary Institute in New York, always wanted to return to his native Ohio and own his own restaurant. However, possibly for the best, he was sidetracked for a number of years working in a number of noted Manhattan restaurants. He describes those years as “being immersed in the city’s food culture.” That’s a superb culinary education. Columbus is the beneficiary of Dornback’s education and experience. To double those benefits, his partner is Trish Gentile, his wife. Together they have provided Columbus with an upscale Italian cuisine that is one of the finest presentations in the city. As a testimonial to perfection, Basi Italia has been on The Dispatch’s Top 10 fine dining list since opening. `Basi Italian doubles as a dine-in and carryout operation. The menu showcases both seafood and veal with Italian treatments. Example: One major attraction is Dornback’s rigatoni salumerie (with tomatoes, sausage, raisins, pinenuts and fennel). There is a gourmet pizza menu. There is a reasonably priced wine list – which is rare in the fine dining establishments of Columbus. 811 Highland Ave. Columbus, Ohio USA www.basi-italia.com 614-294-7383
