Graeter's Ice Cream

Two businessmen liked a Cincinnati ice cream - Graeter’s. Fifteen years ago they brought the brand to Columbus, opening what turned out to be a small ice cream factory at 1534 W. Lane Ave. Clay Cookerly and Maury Levine had instant success at the single location. Today they have 12 ice cream stores open in Columbus and Dayton.

Graeter’s has a public showcase today in a full operating ice cream factory at 2555 Bethel Rd. Kids and families stroll by the glass-enclosed ice cream packing plant and then into a Graeter’s dining room. In season, they venture onto a patio. Graeter’s at the Bethel address is an ice cream restaurant seating up to 100. There is an indoor playground for ages 10 and under with an attached party room.

Graeter’s makes and hand packs 30 flavors at any given time. Most popular is the black raspberry chip and peach when in season. In 2003 Graeter’s, in concert with chef June McCarthy of Ohio Proud, created the highly popular Buckeye Blitz - a mix of chocolate and peanut butter ice cream with dark chocolate chips and peanut butter cookie dough. The Blitz has been a major success in a city where the Ohio State University football Buckeyes claimed the national NCAA championship for 2003. Advisory credit for the Blitz goes to chef June McCarthy of Ohio Proud.

In 2004 Graeter’s served three million customers in Columbus and Dayton. That explains success for a plant that packs 1,200 gallons daily in season - making ice cream two gallons at a time.
