Five Couples in Love to Say Their
Slyder Vows Over White Castles

Chances are when you read this Valentine story, you will have missed the love story for the season. White Castle is reopening the Slyder Palace at 4525 Kenny Rd. In keeping with the hearts and flowers date, five weddings were scheduled for 7:45 a.m. To make ready the Slyder eatery, which had been closed for months while the new building was put in place, opened Sunday.

The social event is billed as the Woodhead Wedding. White Castle enlisted the help of WCOL on-air personality Woody Johnson and his fellow-Woodhead, Rev. Eric. The dining room was decorated with typical weddings flowers befitting Valentine's Day.

Jenifer Zuehlke of White Castle said the new building reflects a reimaged Castle - lots of earth tones with totally different lighting from the older stores. Sorry we didn't have this little love story a week ago so as to boost attendance.

Easton's McCormick & Schmick's hires locals

The new fish house at Easton, set to open Feb. 28, will be loaded with grand opening kitchen talent from several Columbus restaurants. One of the top managers, John Griffith, stepped away from 15 years with Schmidt's in German Village to sign on.

Three in the kitchen include David Ware, formerly with Bonefish Grill in Dublin; Bo Carter, once with Cameron Mitchell Restaurants; and Joel Cain, culinary background unknown.

Mitchell Elevates Walter Carpenter

Walter Carpenter, one of the city's best-known restaurant personalities, is having his responsibilities spread over at least two states. After eight years with Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, presently as manager of the showplace, M in Miranova, Carpenter will become regional operations director in July.

While keeping tabs on M, Carpenter will oversee the opening of two new Mitchell restaurants in Milwaukee - a Mitchell's Fish Market in November; and a Cameron's Steakhouse in 2007.

At Last, Some Reeb's News

If you remember when all the decent restaurants were in Downtown Columbus, then you recall that a top eatery on the fringe was Reeb's. It was considered a "Worth Driving To" dinner destination. Opened in 1911, Reeb's fell on hard times in the late 1980s and since then, ravaged by the elements and time, gave up.

At 10 a.m. on Feb. 28, the 3,500-square-foot building and 26,000-square-foot parking lot goes under the hammer. Auctioneer Rich Kruse will gavel down the remains at 1043 E. Livingston Ave. For information call 614-581-7005.

Two Closings

Add two closings last week to the growing 2006 list now at eight for this short year:

  • Zola Dining Lounge, 782 N. High St., closed without advance notice. The operation with Thomas Suddes as general manager opened April 8, 2004. At the time the renovation of space originally called Frezno was said to have an investment of $750,000. According to liquor department records, five permits were held by Suddes and Donald Roberts, the latter listed as vice president and treasurer of the ownership entity, TK Edwards LLC. Street talk has it that the location may become an independent Mexican restaurant.

  • Big Ten Subs & Salads, 3051 Northwest Blvd., Kingsdale, locked down Sunday, Feb. 5. All equipment was auctioned off two days later, Feb. 7. When the place closed, the name had been changed to Big Subs & Salads, the result of a legal issue involving the Big Ten Conference.

Unsafe at the Plate costly

Recall when Chi-Chi's in Pittsburgh caused an outbreak of hepatitis in 2003? Four people died; 9,500 diners sought inoculations, of which 4,931 filed claims for reimbursement. Chi-Chi's, which had filed for bankruptcy protection, has since been liquidated. Dig this: The chain had earmarked $800,000 for reimbursement of those shots. All the 4,931 will be getting checks for $162.23.

Ultimate Chili Testimonial

Besides a demanding law practice, Randall Robinson still cooks for charity events and at his daughter's school affairs. After he won the 1991 International Chili Society cookoff, he cooled his pots for less demanding crowds. Along the way he was passing out taste samples and a woman spooned up a bite. "Needs more," she said. Robinson, thinking he had another judge to please, asked, "More what?"

Her reply: "Just more," handing over her taste dish.
