Her mother made her do it. Well, not really. Her mother, Norma Seekins, has been the lasting influence that today has moved daughter to a high professional level in the culinary field. As a little girl growing up in Upper Arlington, Ohio, Shelley Owen was in the family kitchen learning how to bake pies, cakes and cookies. Today she is the program planner for Sur La Table, that popular cooking everything venue at Easton Town Center in Columbus.

Her first cake was German chocolate. Owen holds a bachelors degree from Ohio State University in home economics. At the time Owen was interested in the food sciences...she learned how different ingredients interacted with one another. Today she likes the business end of food, marketing of foods to be specific.

All along Owen thought about being in the food business in some capacity. That came in 1987 when she opened the very popular Savories, a combination deli-cafe-catering operation. In any given year of the 10 the place was open, she and her partner, Janice Weiser, catered hundreds of affairs, corporate and private. They were ahead of their time when they prepared HMRs - home meal replacements. Typically an HMR could contain meat loaf, two sides, bread, a salad, dessert, all assembled by the patron’s pointing... or a call-ahead.

HMRs ended up as half the Savories business.

In her Savories decade Owen and Weiser entered a pizza contest with their pesto pizza. They won. Columbus restaurant reviewers praised the Savories offerings. One noted menu item was the twice-baked potato with sour cream. cheddar and green onions.

Many of the Owen recipes have been published in various cook books. Today she is presiding over the cooking demonstrations at Sur La Table. She has some 20 demonstrations a month with name chefs presiding, both local and national culinary names.

Also the Sur La Table showcase kitchen is used by customers who may want to use the facility for private teaching sessions. The venue has been used for a private birthday party, and corporate meetings in conjunction with a cooking class. Owen coordinates many such events over the year.

Owen plays favorites. She likes anyone who teaches desserts, or chefs who conduct dessert classes. Why? “Because that’s probably what I always wanted to do.” Blame it on Norma.
